Triton Elementary School

What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program designed to ensure quality education for all eligible students.  The Title I program of Triton Elementary School is titled *STARS* (Students and Teachers Achieving Reading Success) and is intended to provide supplemental instruction to students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 in the area of reading.

Who is served by Title I?

Any child who is in academic need may be served by the Title I *STARS* program. This may include migrant children, limited English proficient children, children who are homeless, and children with disabilities.

How are students selected?

Students are selected for Triton Elementary School’s *STARS* program based on a variety of criteria.  Data from test scores including DIBELS, TRC, Baseline Assessments from Scott Foresman, ISTEP+, and teacher referrals provide information concerning student performance levels in reading.  The information gathered is then used to determine those students who are in the greatest need of services provided by Title I.

What is the reading program design at our school?

Triton Elementary School’s reading program is designed around the 3-Tier Reading ModelAll students in grades K-3 receive 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction daily that focuses on the core reading program; (grades 4-6 receive at least 60 minutes daily).  This is called Tier I.  As students qualify for *STARS* in grades K-6, they receive Tier II instruction, which consists of 20-30 additional minutes of small group instruction each day or Tier III, which consists of 30-60 additional minutes of small group instruction each day.

(Students who receive these additional services will be served by Tier II or Tier III but not both at the same time.)

How large are groups and who teaches them?

Groups of 1-6 students are formed based on the results of the information gained through assessments.  The *STARS* small group instruction is planned and taught by a certified teacher. Reading curriculum specializing in intervention is utilized.  Students’ progress is monitored closely by both the classroom teacher and the *STARS* teacher.  In response, groups may change from time to time.

Is my child at a disadvantage by missing regular instruction?

At Triton Elementary we have made READING our #1 priority.  Our goal is to have each child reading at grade level.  Your child will not be pulled from the reading block, math instruction, or lunch.  Making every effort to enable your child to read is giving your child every advantage in today’s world.

Are there resources available for parents?

The Title I program maintains resources and supplies for parent use.  We are here to support your child and you.  Contact the principal, the classroom teacher, or one of the *STARS*  teachers if you have specific needs.

What about parent involvement?

Parents are a child’s first teacher.  Parents are considered to be one of the best resources in helping a child who is experiencing difficulty in school.  Every attempt is made to involve parents in the process of educating their child.  Parents are encouraged to call to arrange a visit or parent conference at any time during the year.  Workshops are held throughout the year to support interested parents as they help their child at home.  Parent involvement is an important component of Title I.
